I Honestly Thought I'd Have To Live With It Forever
A young man's journey with vitiligo, the challenges he faced, and the progress that gave him hope.
Vitiligo had spread across the left side of his face, from the edge toward the middle.
If someone had told me a few years ago that vitiligo would become part of my life, I never would've believed them.
It started on the left side of my face and slowly spread toward the middle. At first I tried not to let it bother me, but as the patches became more noticeable, it got harder to ignore. Going out in public wasn't the same anymore. Even when people weren't trying to be rude, I'd catch them looking, and over time it really started to affect my confidence.
It wasn't the patches. It was losing my confidence.
Because the white patches burn so easily, sunscreen became something I couldn't leave the house without. I also booked an appointment with a dermatologist, hoping there would be a treatment that would finally help.
Unfortunately, that wasn't my experience.
One treatment wasn't covered by my insurance, so it would've been completely out of pocket. Another option was close to $1,200, which just wasn't realistic for me. After hearing all of that, I honestly felt defeated. I started thinking this was something I'd just have to live with.
My mom wasn't ready to give up though.
